Education at Redmount

At Redmount we take a particular interest and drive in training and developing staff, not just for our home but to better aid the future of the care industry. We recognise that what we do for them today will help shape how care is delivered in years to come and feel that it is our obligation and duty as responsible providers and managers to do all we can to help secure `good care’ for everyone both now and in the future.

All staff at Redmount embark upon a Continuous Professional Development Portfolio upon commencement of their employment. This Portfolio combines the required Supervisions and Appraisals expected as part of the National Minimum Standards for Care homes but it provides far more than just this. All employees work through an individual personal development programme which encourages them to continuously reflect and develop upon their skills and knowledge using their own experiences, lessons learnt from past failures in Health and Social care and the views and opinions of the people living with us.

Redmount takes the training and development of its employees very seriously. As a Professional and Proactive Company we have our own Training Manager who focuses on training and developing staff to a very high standard whether this be individually or as a team. Staff at Redmount benefit from their own training facility which provides a creative an open environment in which to learn, study and develop. The Manager of the home is particularly passionate about developing her staff and holds workshops in specific care needs for individuals as they arise as well as providing support workshops for people working through Diplomas in Health and Social Care.

A Family

Redmount has always been a family home with family values and strong community links. No one person works here with the approach of ‘it’s just a job’. Staff at Redmount were specifically and carefully selected simply because they demonstrated that they ‘cared’ and not as a result of the commonly found staff shortages. Staff live and work as part of this close knit community and can often be found visiting their work place even on their days off! Bringing their children to spend the afternoon with residents or taking residents out for afternoon tea because they feel it a home from home environment. Each and every person who stays with us becomes a part of our family and us theirs. It is for this reason that we never forget the people that have lived with us and spent their final days with us and remember them every day through our practices, Religious services and the memories of how privileged we felt for being able to be part of these people’s lives.

Pet Friendly

Here at Redmount we welcome visitors of all breeds, makes and models!

Many of our residents and some staff have farming backgrounds and/or have enjoyed the company of pets for many years so they love to see them in their home.

No animals are excluded. In the past we have been visited by many of the much loved dogs and cats of Buckfastleigh but also; `Alan’ the Donkey is a regular guest, Bantham Chicks are reared by the residents at times, Owls, Tortoises, goats, Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and many more.

Should you wish to bring in any exotic animals please contact us ahead of your visit so that we can ensure we can facilitate them safely.

Spring 2016

Young Visitors

Our young visitors Angus (2 ½) and his brother Rufus (1 ½) continue to visit us weekly. We had a great tea party with them out in the garden on the first sunny, warm day of the season, with at least 8 residents out soaking up the rays!

Biscuit Band Project

Thanks to our Biscuit Band project, we’ve been enjoying the company in the lounge of both young and old new faces, and some not so new. As well as welcoming in children and their parents we’ve also managed to reunite Pam Squires with several old friends she hasn’t seen for many years. Band leader Hugh from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra has enabled us to make some fabulous music together – seriously! With the help of some talented musicians including trombone, guitar, flute and saxophone we’ve sounded just great. The glockenspiel in particular has been a great hit.

Day Trip out to Living coasts

Our trip to Living Coasts in Torquay was a big success: here is Rita meeting the penguin colony. We later spotted an octopus and came face to face with some friendly fur seals! Thanks to Peter and Lesley, Denny and Margaret and Clare Turque and Tamsin for accompanying us on our trips it was a brilliant day all round.

Easter Bonnet Competition

At Easter we held an Easter Bonnet Competition, judged by June Wood ‘Ashburton lady of the hats’. Juliet won and Edie and Lis were well deserved runners up. Special mention has to be made for Denny and Margaret Piper for their incredible efforts!

New Feathered Arrivals

After a game of Budgie Bingo, Juliet and Pam Squires christened our new budgies ‘Piet’ (our green male) and ‘Bella’ (our blue female). Edie and Bill came to choose them and bring them home and they are getting lots of loving attention.

Vegetable Mania

We’ve got herbs, peas and tomatoes as well as some lovely Black Eyed Susans and will be getting Lynn’s dad, star gardener Terry Underhill to give us some advice on our planting activities. Look out for posters advertising the date.

In the Night Garden

Residents have been enjoying the soft glow of butterflies and dragonflies solar lighting out in the garden as the night draws in and Fay has also installed lots of colourful windmills in the garden as part of our garden revamp for Spring.

Muddy Madness?

Fay and lots of the staff are doing the race for life 5k Mud Run in October - all relatives are welcome to sign up with us!

Meet Our Home Manager

Acting Manager - Tracey Meloy

I started my career in care in 1997, I worked for 2 years in a residential home In Suffolk. In 2000 I moved on to work for the NHS on a care of the elderly ward. While working for the NHS I completed my NVQ’s. In 2005 I moved on to work for the private sector and worked for the Nuffield group. I worked in the operating theatre for nearly 8 years, after having my daughter I was unable to sustain the long hours theatre work required. Still within the Nuffield group I returned to work on the ward completing admissions, theatre after care and discharge’s.

In April 2012 our son was deployed to Afghanistan and our daughter went to India. This made us take stock of our lives and as my husband and I both worked in healthcare decided to make changes. Late 2012 after receiving our son home safely we moved to Torquay in Devon to live by the sea. On arrival in Torquay I worked at Torbay Hospital as the surgical bleep cover which included A&E and all surgical wards.

In 2014 I moved on to a home care company and became the team leader for the Buckfastleigh area, this included managing a team of 10 carers and 24 clients, covering Newton Abbot and Bovey Tracey. I came to work at redmount Residential home in 2015 as a senior care supervisor and was promoted to Deputy Manager April 2016.

I have been the Acting Manager here at Redmount residential home since November 2016.We have a great team here at redmount and they have supported me to make the transition to acting manager.

Lots more to learn but loving every minute of it.
